| Getting About |
|
When I lived with Mum and Dad I got around with their help. My Dad invented various contraptions to help. One involved ramps made of wood to help get the electric wheelchair into the car boot. On holiday a Peacock took advantage and decided to go into the boot for a nose!

Kinross Taxis
Once I was living by myself the staff and I had to go shopping using a taxi. If we wanted to do anything else we had to borrow Mum’s car. This meant we spent most of the time near to home.

Saving for up for my Own Car
This took a while as I started to learn to Glide about the same time. Both are expensive things to do. It was hard to choose to do one or the other.
My Own Car
One of the first things I did in my own car was a trip to the Beach at Kinghorn. There was a special hoist in the back that lifted my wheelchair in and out. I was able to decide every day what to do and where to go. I was able to relax at the shops and visit friends and family under my own steam.

My Herbie
I have an electric wheelchair I need to get about get outdoors. He is called Herbie. I am now on Herbie mark 3. I remember when I first learned to use him, going every day to Dundee for driving lessons. It took quite a lot of getting used to. Now people are usually impressed at my manoeuvres. It is always tricky to move around as there are obstacles everywhere. Bins and no drop Kerbs are big culprits. Driving in crowd of people is also tricky.
When I can like to on Herbie myself and have the freedom to drive myself.

My Tractor
I have always had a standard wheelchair and I prefer to call it the Tractor as it has big wheels at the back and wee wheels at the front! Now I use it much less. I need it when I am wheelchair curling. I also need it when it is icy and snowy as I am not very sure about being on my feet. I’d rather not be on my bottom!

My Golf Clubs
I used to use these all the time when in the house. This was after I had a hip operation which helped me to walk. I was about 9 years old then. The picture shows me and my dad after using my golf clubs. It was clearly exhausting! Lindsay had her last operation on her upper left leg, which involved plaster up to her waist, when she was 10 years old. The plaster stayed on for 5 months. She was too big to get through the door! She and Dad were up to more high jinks as he tipped her sideways to get around.

Three Wheeled Bike
Before that I used a 3 wheel bike which I pedalled with both feet. I still use the Golf clubs at Mum’s house when I visit. |

My Scooter
A new member of staff, Susan, wondered if I could use a delta walker. She had seen another girl at my college who she was sure I could walk as well as. I had a try and my Auntie Tia bought me the one I now use. I started to use the scooter for short walks into the local store, hairdresser, café, church. At Church I use to have to sit in my Chair at the back, now I can sit where I like. I can carry things in the pouch like my mail, my washing, my shopping and helping my Dad carry his music around. I like talking to people standing up! I think my muscles are better balanced as I use both sides of my body to help move myself around.

The Trail Mobility Scooters
I helped set up a scheme around the Loch Leven Heritage Trail at Loch Leven for Mobility Scooter. First of all I wanted to be able to use a bike on the Trail and I started to explore this idea. It became clear more people with limited mobility could use Mobility Scooters. This is great freedom to be in the country, in the fresh air away from cars. I love the Trail Scooters! |
